MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

 

March 26, 2007

 

Regular Session

 

 

The meeting was called to order by Chrisanne Gregoire at 7:33 p.m. at the School Department Conference Room.   

 

Members Present:                Chrisanne Gregoire, Steve Nagle, Christine Smith, Barbara Cook, Esther Healey, Linda Hill, Kristin Parnell.

 

Central Office Present:        Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, Jean Curtis Loud, David Killory.

 

Visitors Present:                   Douglas Holley, Roger Boddie, Gretchen Hersey, Paula Girouard McCann, Robert Perry, Karen Beatty, Judy Wilson, Sharon McKay, Robert Ramsey, Hjalmar Nelson, Caryl Falvey, Anna Skinner, Ann Marie Schembri, Ryan Eschauzier.

 

On a motion by Barbara Cook and seconded by Steve Nagle,

 

                It was

                Voted:                    To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of March 12, 2007. 

 

On a motion by Esther Healey and seconded by Kristen Parnell,

 

                It was

                Voted:                    To approve the Minutes of the Executive Session of March 12, 2007.

 

Student School Committee Communications.

 

Anna Skinner spoke about the National Honor Society trivia contest, spring sports season, AP exam schedule, Latin Club trip to Rome, English class novel 1984 by George Orwell, NY Drama Club trip and MCAS ELA tests.

 

Old Business.

 

The Committee held a public meeting regarding School Choice.  Dot Galo explained the background of the Massachusetts School Choice Program.

 

On a motion by Linda Hill and seconded by Esther Healey,

 

                It was

                Voted:                    To adopt a resolution withdrawing from participating in the State’s School                                                                             Choice Program. 

 

New Business.

 

The Committee heard a report on the Health Education Program.  Karen Beatty, Health Education Resource Teacher, presented an overview of the report including introduction and background, Health Education Committee, Title IV Safe & Drug Free Schools and Communities funding and programs, descriptive information on elementary, middle school and high school health ed programs and curriculum, Healthy Choices grant program at Hingham Middle School, changes since the last program review in grants, funding and staffing, curricular programs, program strengths and program concerns and needs and recommendations.  Committee members asked questions.

 

The Committee heard a report on the Industrial Technology Program.  Paul Pawlowski, Industrial Technology Resource Teacher, presented an overview of the report including philosophy, staffing, course offerings, student enrollment, introduction of staff members, curriculum design, strengths and areas of concern at middle and high school.  Committee members asked questions and congratulated Bob Perry on his retirement and thanked him for his many years of service.

 

Dot Galo reviewed the NEASC/CPSS Standard on School Resources, Part VI of a 7-part discussion. 

  

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Linda Hill,

 

                It was

                Voted:                    To approve the school bus lease award, as recommended. 

 

The Committee received notification of spring coaching assignments, as recommended. 

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Elizabeth Shorey, a paraprofessional at Foster School, effective March 9, 2007.

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Thea Cosmopulos, a paraprofessional at South School, effective March 23, 2007. 

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Marianne Primack, a teacher at Kids In Action, effective April 2, 2007. 

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Christine Noguer, a Spanish teacher at Plymouth River School, effective June 30, 2007. 

 

The Committee received notification of the appointment of Pamela Francis as a paraprofessional at South School.

 

The Committee received notification of the appointment of Kristen Smeriglio as a paraprofessional at Foster School, effective March 12, 2007. 

 

2006 School Building Committee and Sub-committee Reports.

 

Steve Nagle reported on a recent School Building Committee meeting.  Barbara Cook, Chair of the Community Outreach Subcommittee, reported on recent and scheduled meetings at the schools and the Hingham Public Library for updates on the school building project.

 

Superintendent’s Report.

 

1.             e-news from Central Office.

2.             Family Literacy Newsletter and Staff Literacy Newsletters written by Leslie Flanagan, Literacy           Coordinator.

3.             Faculty members invited to provide presentations:  Fred Jewett – Dating & Sexual Violence Conference at      Bridgewater State College; Chris White and Ron Woolley – Massachusetts Initiative for International             Studies Conference at UMass, Boston.
