MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

 

June 4, 2007

 

Regular Session

 

 

 

The meeting was called to order by Chrisanne Gregoire at 7:32 p.m. at the School Department Conference Room.   

 

Members Present:         Chrisanne Gregoire, Christine Smith, Barbara Cook, Caryl Falvey, Esther Healey, Linda Hill, Steve Nagle.

 

Central Office Present:  Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, Jean Curtis Loud.

 

Visitors Present:            Gretchen Hersey, Roger Boddie, Camilla Roundtree, Bill Barges, Steve Daly,  Jon Rice, Meghan Sweeney, Chris Davidson, Eugene Buczynski, Meg O’Donnell, Pat Callahan, Brian Pattison.

 

On a motion by Esther Healey and seconded by Linda Hill,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of May 31, 2007.  Steve Nagle abstained.

 

On a motion by Esther Healey and seconded by Barbara Cook,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Executive Session of May 31, 2007.  Steve Nagle abstained.

 

Communications.

 

Dot Galo noted a letter from the Hingham League of Women Voters regarding a two-year study of municipal finance.

 

Old Business.

 

On a motion by Caryl Falvey and seconded by Barbara Cook.

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the revised school calendar for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Esther Healey,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve July 23 and August 20 as School Committee meeting dates.

 

New Business.

 

The Committee heard a report from the Physical Education Department.  Bill Barges, Director, introduced the P.E. staff members and provided an overview of the report, including revised K-12 curriculum aligned with MA and National Frameworks, strengths, and considerations for the future.  Jon Rice reviewed the HHS P.E. program including lifetime activities, wellness activities, strength training, rock climbing, volleyball tournaments, grading systems, fitness fundamentals and facilities.  Brian Pattison reviewed the HMS P.E. program including a walking club, peg board, and silver/gold star recognition, after school intramurals program, facilities, and class size.  Eugene Buczynski reviewed the elementary P.E. program including fitness concepts, motivation, enjoyment of exercise, and muscle groups.  Bill reviewed concerns related to lack of fitness and physical activity.  Committee members thanked Bill and the staff and asked questions.

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Robert Mullaney, Assistant Principal at Hingham High School, effective July 1, 2007.

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation for the purpose of retirement of Fred Jewett, an English teacher at Hingham High School, effective September 30, 2007.

 

The Committee received notification of the appointment of Allison Bonnyman Clarke as a foreign language teacher at Hingham Middle School, effective August 27, 2007.

 

The Committee received notification of the appointment of Kelly Fitzgerald as a school counselor at Hingham High School, effective August 27, 2007.

 

The Committee received notification of the appointment of Jenna Nelson as a special education teacher at Hingham Middle School, effective August 27, 2007.

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Esther Healey,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve a bid for copy paper, as recommended.

 

On a motion by Caryl Falvey and seconded by Steve Nagle,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the athletic trainer contract.

 

2006 School Building Committee and sub-committee reports.

 

Steve Nagle reported on two recent School Building Committee meetings.  An update will be provided at the June 18 School Committee meeting.  The School Building Committee is meeting with the Conservation  Commission tonight, June 4.  The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) notified Dot that a committee will be visiting the elementary and middle school regarding the overcrowding issue.

 

Superintendent’s Report.

 

1.         Century Club Recognition Banquet sponsored by the Hingham/Hull Rotary Club.

2.         Johns Hopkins Talent Search recognition.  Results were excellent.

3.         HHS Awards and Scholarships – Class of 2007.

4.         Enrollment projections for 2007-2008.

 

On a motion by Steve Nagle and seconded by Esther Healey,

            It was

            Voted:              By roll call vote, with all in favor, to adjourn to Executive Session at 9:10 p.m. to  discuss the terms of a Memorandum of Agreement with Unit A of the Hingham                                       Education Association.  The Committee stated it would not reconvene in Regular   Session.
