MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

 

October 9, 2007

 

Regular Session

 

 

The meeting was called to order by Chrisanne Gregoire at 7:37 p.m. at Plymouth River School. 

 

Members Present:         Chrisanne Gregoire, Christine Smith, Barbara Cook, Caryl Falvey, Esther Healey, Steve Nagle.

 

Central Office Present:  Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, Jean Curtis Loud, David Killory.

 

Visitors Present:            Chuck Cormier, Gretchen Amonte, Sharon McKay, Melissa Robin. 

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Caryl Falvey,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of September 24, 2007. 

 

On a motion by Esther Healey and seconded by Barbara Cook,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Executive Session of September 24, 2007.

 

 

Communications.

 

The Committee heard a report from Plymouth River School.  Chuck Cormier, Principal, reported on the following programs and activities:  Math Olympics, Body Image (funded by HEF), “Catch the Beat”, grade 1 Literacy Model, Children’s Garden (funded by HEF), Cape Cod Trip, 1000 Book Club, and “Thinking Green”.

 

Old Business.

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Caryl Falvey,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the proposed School Committee/Superintendent Goals for 2007- 2008.

 

On a motion by Barbara Cook and seconded by Steve Nagle,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the home school request for Jessica Lawless.

 

New Business.

 

The Committee received a draft policy on fundraising/gift acceptance, as recommended by the Policy  Subcommittee.  Esther Healey, Chair, reviewed the proposed draft policy.  Committee members asked questions.

 

 

On a motion by Barbara Cook and seconded by Christine Smith,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve tutor benefits guidelines, as recommended by the Salary & Negotiations Subcommittee.

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Barbara Cook,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve draft of letters of support for the METCO Program.

 

On a motion by Barbara Cook and seconded by Christine Smith,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the 07-08 salary of the Director of Student Services, as recommended by the Salary & Negotiations Subcommittee.

 

On a motion by Barbara Cook and seconded by Steve Nagle,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve contracts and 07-08 salaries for the following, as recommended by the Salary & Negotiations Subcommittee:  Superintendent, Assistant   Superintendent, Director of Business and Support Services.

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Eleanor Goldsmith, a food service worker at Hingham High School, effective September 24, 1007.

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Christine Nazzaro, a paraprofessional at Hingham Middle School, effective October 5, 2007.

 

The Committee received information regarding an overnight field trip of the High School  Drama Club to New York  City April 4-6, 2008.

 

The Committee received information regarding an overnight field trip of the Spanish Club to Spain April 17-27, 2008.

 

Budget.

 

Dot Galo noted the first Town forecast meeting.

 

2006 School Building Committee and Subcommittee Reports.

 

Christine Smith, Chair, Long Range Planning Subcommittee, reported on meetings on September 28 and October 2.

 

Barbara Cook, Chair of the Special Education Subcommittee, reported on a recent meeting. 

 

Caryl Falvey, Chair of the Community Outreach Subcommittee, reported on encouraging voter registration.

 

 

Superintendent’s Report.

 

1.         Elementary grade level meetings, September/October:  2007-2008 HPS Assessment Plan, curriculum goals and initiatives, professional development plans.

2.         NEASC questions for School Committees and meeting with the Visiting Team on Sunday,  October 14 at 3:00 p.m.

3.         NAEP results.

4.         Jump Up & Go Award – Hingham Middle School

5.         10/1/07 enrollment.

6.         Diane Ravitch article, New York Times.

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Steve Nagle,

 

            It was

            Voted:              By roll call vote, with all in favor, to adjourn to Executive Session at 9:15 p.m. to  discuss strategies related to Collective Bargaining.   The Committee stated it would not re-convene in Regular Session.
