MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

 

December 3, 2007

 

Regular Session

 

 

The meeting was called to order by Chrisanne Gregoire at 7:45 p.m. at Hingham High School

 

Members Present:         Chrisanne Gregoire, Christine Smith, Barbara Cook, Caryl Falvey, Esther Healey, Linda Hill, Steve Nagle.

 

Central Office Present:  Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, Jean Curtis Loud, David Killory.

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Barbara Cook,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of November 19, 2007. 

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Esther Healey,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Executive Session of November 19, 2007.

 

On a motion by Barbara Cook and seconded by Linda Hill,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Memorandum of Agreement Between the Hingham School Committee and the Hingham Education Association Paraprofessional Unit 2007-2010.

 

Communications.

 

The Committee heard a report from Hingham High School.  Paula Girouard McCann, Principal, introduced student representatives from ADL and a new student mediation program and described the two programs.  The students led an ADL activity with the School Committee.  Jen Henriksen, Assistant Principal, and Pat Tomecek explained the student peer mediation program and the Peacekeepers course.  Jen introduced four student mediators who simulated a typical student mediation meeting.  Committee members asked questions and thanked Paula, Jen, Pat, and the students.

 

New Business.

 

The Committee received the Hingham High School CEEB Testing and Placement Report for the Class of 2007.  Heather Lewallen, Director of School Counseling, reviewed the report including a summary of post graduate plans, levels of competitiveness, SAT changes, SAT subject tests, and AP scholars.  School Committee members asked questions and thanked Heather.  Dot Galo noted that HHS was designated as a Silver Medal school in U.S. News and World Report.

 

 

The Committee heard a report on the High School Alumni Survey.  Paula Girouard McCann reviewed the results of the survey including future preparation learning skills, academic programs, guidance and support services, library services, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, school climate and overall rating.  Committee members asked questions.

 

The Committee received notification of the resignation of Megan Cox, a paraprofessional at Hingham Middle School, effective November 28, 2007. 

 

The Committee received notification of the appointment of Kathleen Bird as a clerical assistant in the Central Office, effective December 3, 2007.   

 

On a motion by Linda Hill and seconded by Barbara Cook,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve 2007-2008 stipends for:  Continuing Education Supervisor, Driver Education Coordinator, and Salary & Benefit Guidelines for the Supervisor of  Food Services.

 

Subcommittee Reports.

 

Christine Smith, Chair, Long Range Planning Subcommittee, reported on a recent meeting regarding the athletic fields.  There will be a presentation to the School Committee in January regarding field relocation options.  The Hingham elementary project has been put on the MSBA list of 83 schools. 

 

Steve Nagle, School Building Committee representative, reported on a recent meeting and consensus on moving forward with Foster and PRS renovations.

 

Barbara Cook, Special Education Subcommittee Chair, reported on a recent meeting regarding an overview of special education.  The next meeting is January 31, 2008.

 

Superintendent’s Report.

 

1.         HHS Happenings Newsletter:  Major Works Concert “La Belle Musique.”

2.         Next School Committee Meeting, December 17, will be at the central office and will include a budget overview.
