MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

January 28, 2007

Regular Session

 

 

The meeting was called to order by Chrisanne Gregoire at 7:35 p.m. in the School Department Conference Room. 

 

Members Present:           Chrisanne Gregoire, Christine Smith, Barbara Cook, Caryl Falvey, Esther Healey, Linda Hill.

 

Central Office Present:    Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, Jean Curtis Loud.

 

Visitors Present:             Alan Freedman, Roger Boddie, Doug Holley, Todd Millen, Paula Girouard McCann, Joseph Young, Jean Garrity, Kathy Czerny, Nina Wellford, Richard McManus, Melissa Robin, Carol Meyer of the Hingham Journal

 

On a motion by Esther Healey and seconded by Linda Hill,

 

            It was

            Voted:               To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of January 7, 2008. 

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Esther Healey,

 

            It was

            Voted:               To approve the Minutes of the Executive Session of January 7, 2008.

 

On a motion by Linda Hill and seconded by Esther Healey,

 

            It was

            Voted:               To approve the Minutes of the Budget Hearing of January 10, 2008.

 

On a motion by Christine Smith and seconded by Linda Hill,

 

            It was

            Voted:               To approve the Minutes of the Budget Hearing of January 17, 2008.

 

On a motion by Esther Healey and seconded by Linda Hill,

 

            It was

            Voted:               To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of January 22, 2008.

 

New Business.

 

The Committee received the proposed Program of Studies for 2008-2009.  Ellen Keane reviewed a summary of the changes in the Program of Studies for 2008-2009.  Committee members asked questions.

 

The Committee received information about the new “H-3” partnership including the Hingham Public Schools Music Department, the South Shore Conservatory (SSC), and the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (ASO).  Joe Young, Music Resource Teacher, introduced Kathy Czerny (SSC) and Nina Wellford (ASO) and provided an overview of the H-3 Community Music Partnership, including reviewing a list of highlights of the Partnership.  Linda Hill thanked Joe, Kathy and Nina for establishing the Partnership and providing more opportunities for our students.

 

The Committee heard an update on the approval status of Beal Street Academy.  Ellen Keane provided a review of the progress of the Beal Street Academy in meeting all of the required criteria and recommended final approval.

 

 

On a motion by Barbara Cook and seconded by Esther Healey,

 

            It was

            Voted:               To grant final approval of the private school, The Beal Street Academy in                                         Hingham.

 

The Committee received information about the proposed searches for administrative vacancies.  Dot Galo noted that the first meetings of both the South School Principal and the Athletic Director search committees are scheduled for Monday, February 4th at 7:15 p.m. at the Central Office.

 

The Committee received notification of the appointment of Teresa Murano as a permanent substitute teacher of foreign language at Hingham Middle School, effective January 30, 2008 through June 30, 2008

 

The Committee received notification of the change in employment status for Barbara Cullen, from a substitute to permanent food service technician at Hingham High School, effective January 1, 2008. 

 

The Committee received notification of the change in employment status for Joanne O’Brien, from a substitute to permanent food service technician at Hingham High School, effective January 1, 2008. 

 

The Committee received notification of the advancement on the salary schedule to Master’s +30 for Pamela Amster, a grade 1 teacher at South School, effective February 1, 2008.

 

The Committee received notification of the advancement on the salary schedule to Master’s Degree for Patrick Callahan, a physical education teacher at Hingham Middle School, effective February 1, 2008.

 

The Committee received notification of the advancement on the salary schedule to Master’s +60 for Shastin Garland, a grade 3 teacher at Foster School, effective February 1, 2008.

 

The Committee received information regarding an overnight field trip of the AFS Club to an AFS Club in Westlake, Ohio, February 21-25, 2008.  Committee members asked questions.

 

The Committee received information regarding an overnight field trip of the High School Student Council to an MASC Conference in Hyannis March 12-14, 2008.  Committee members asked questions.

 

Subcommittee Reports.

 

School Building Committee meeting Tuesday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m.  Special Education Subcommittee meeting Thursday, January 31, 2008

 

Superintendent’s Report.

 

1.         Ann Levin, HMS math teacher, and Laney Silva, ELA Director, have been approved to serve on MA   DOE committees.

 

2.         Michelle Green, HMS paraprofessional, was selected by the MTA to receive a grant to attend an NEA  national conference.
